Sam LaPorta Injury Update: Lions TE Details Back Surgery, 2026 Comeback Plans (2026)

The journey of Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta has taken a bit of a dramatic turn due to a back injury that sidelined him for the last eight games of the season. Initially, there was some uncertainty surrounding the severity of his condition; all that was known was that it necessitated season-ending surgery. Fortunately, the promising 2023 second-round draft pick is expected to make a full recovery and be ready in time for training camp in 2026.

On locker room cleanout day, LaPorta addressed the media for the first time since undergoing surgery, shedding light on the circumstances surrounding his injury. He revealed that he had been dealing with an accumulation of falls and impacts throughout the season, but it was during the game against the Washington Commanders in Week 10 that the situation escalated. "That’s when one of my vertebrae discs fully herniated," LaPorta explained, detailing the seriousness of his condition.

He continued, "Numbness and tingling and muscle loss–it happened shortly after that. When you can’t do a single-leg calf raise, it’s kinda hard to play football. So that’s kind of where we were at.” The gravity of his injury began to set in as LaPorta initially hoped to recover from what he thought might be a minor ailment. In the realm of sports injuries, recovery times can vary significantly—from a few weeks for less severe injuries to several months or even the need for surgery in more serious cases. Unfortunately, after a couple of weeks without improvement, both he and the team concluded that surgery was the best option. Consequently, LaPorta was placed on injured reserve, leading to the surgical intervention.

"Backs aren’t anything to mess with, and I want to have a long, healthy career, so it was the best route," he stated, emphasizing the importance of making decisions that prioritize his long-term health.

Now, six weeks post-surgery, LaPorta is optimistic and eager to begin the next phase of his rehabilitation process. He confirmed head coach Dan Campbell's expectations for him to be ready by the upcoming training camp. "Hopefully by OTAs, I’m up running around and then, of course, we’ll be in pads in training camp," LaPorta said, acknowledging the unique physical demands of football compared to other sports. "It’s a lot different than other sports; just to be able to brace for those hits, and the accumulation of a long NFL season, I’ve really got to get this back right before I’m out there running around in pads and taking those hits and such."

Despite this being the first significant injury of his athletic career, LaPorta reassured fans that it wouldn't alter his aggressive approach to the game. He understands the necessity of maintaining a strong mindset and not allowing injuries to dictate how he plays. “You can’t really worry about those things, to be honest. You just have to assume that you’re going to make it through the game healthy and you’re going to give your best effort every week when you go out,” LaPorta expressed. He acknowledged that accidents are an unfortunate part of the sport, stating, “You train, you prepare, and get your body as best as you can for the season, and then some things happen, and you’ve just got to live with the results, unfortunately. It’s the game we play.”

In his nine games played this past season, LaPorta made an impressive contribution with 40 receptions for a total of 489 yards, a performance that was on track to secure career-high statistics for a player already performing at Pro Bowl levels. Furthermore, he demonstrated considerable development in his blocking skills in both the run and pass game. Proud of his growth, LaPorta is eager to continue building on his progress once he returns to the field. "I was very happy with how I was playing in my third season. I felt like I was making strides even from my first and second year, and hopefully, an even better player will emerge in the future once I rehab and get healthy again."
